A global multi-manager hedge fund is hiring an APAC cyclicals sector analyst.

About the Platform

The firm allocates risk capital to individual portfolio managers, who run market-neutral or low-net books within a formal risk framework covering gross and net exposure, factor and sector neutrality, position limits and drawdown thresholds. Risk analytics, financing, data, company access and compliance are provided by the platform.

About the Role

You will cover cyclicals for a portfolio manager building a new team, with a mandate across metals and mining and across chemicals. Oil and gas sits outside the mandate.

Joining a team at formation means more scope than a seat on an established desk: you will help shape coverage priorities, the research process and the data the team relies on, alongside the day-to-day analytical work.

Key Responsibilities

  • Own coverage across metals, mining and chemicals, generating both long and short ideas
  • Build and maintain models, and run primary research including channel checks, industry and expert calls, trade and shipment data, and company meetings
  • Track the commodity and cost curves underneath your names: supply and demand balances, inventory, utilisation, spreads, freight and input costs, and the policy and environmental regimes that move them
  • Monitor positions and catalysts, and flag thesis-changing developments promptly
  • Work with the portfolio manager on sizing, pairs and hedging within the book's risk parameters, and help build the team's research process from the ground up

Requirements

  • Two to five years covering metals and mining, chemicals or broader cyclicals at a hedge fund, long-only manager or on the sell side
  • A working understanding of commodity fundamentals and how they transmit into equity earnings and multiples
  • Strong modelling and primary research capability
  • Comfort in a market-neutral framework, including factor exposure and pair construction
  • The appetite to build something rather than inherit it, and to work at pace with a new portfolio manager
