A global multi-manager hedge fund is seeking an experienced portfolio manager to run a dedicated Australian long/short equity book. The platform allocates risk capital to individual portfolio managers across strategies and regions, and is expanding its coverage of the Australian market.

About the Role

You will run your own book with full investment discretion inside the platform's risk framework. Capital is allocated to you directly and scales with performance and capacity. The firm provides the infrastructure around the seat: risk analytics, prime brokerage and financing, data and technology, compliance, and support for building out your own analyst team as the book grows.

The mandate is Australian equities, typically run market neutral or at low net exposure, with disciplined factor, sector and beta control. Depending on the platform and your track record, the mandate may extend to New Zealand and to Australian-listed companies with offshore operations.

Key Responsibilities

  • Manage a dedicated Australian long/short equity portfolio with responsibility for idea generation, sizing, hedging and risk
  • Operate within the platform's risk parameters, including gross and net exposure limits, factor and sector neutrality, position concentration limits and drawdown thresholds
  • Cover the ASX large-cap universe and, where the strategy calls for it, small and mid-cap opportunities across resources, financials, energy, healthcare, industrials, consumer and REITs
  • Build and lead an analyst team over time, and manage the research process behind the book
  • Maintain a rigorous fundamental research process supported by primary work, company access and channel checks
  • Engage constructively with the central risk team on positioning, exposures and capacity

Requirements

  • A track record of managing an Australian long/short equity book, either at a multi-manager platform or in a comparable seat at a single-manager fund, long-only manager or bank proprietary desk. Senior analyst or sub-PM experience covering Australian long/short equities is also considered
  • Demonstrable, verifiable P&L attributable to your own decisions, generated with consistent risk-adjusted returns rather than directional beta
  • Deep fundamental knowledge of the Australian market and its sector composition, with a genuine edge in at least one core vertical
  • Strong understanding of factor risk, portfolio construction and hedging in a constrained-exposure framework
  • The discipline to work within a formal risk framework, including drawdown limits, and the temperament to manage through them
  • Ability to attract and develop analyst talent as capital allocation grows
  • Existing right to work in Australia or Hong Kong, or eligibility to relocate

Compensation follows the standard platform structure: a competitive base with a formulaic payout on net trading profits. Details are discussed directly.
